What will I see?
“The fusion of Greek and Jewish history”This captivating tour begins at the foot of the rock which upon holds the crown jewel of Athens. Ascend the path and you will be welcomed by the great gate known as the Propylaia, pass beneath its mighty stature and enter the Acropolis! There you will be welcomed by the grandeur that is the Parthenon Temple, a tribute to the Goddess Athena herself who lends her name to the great city of Athens. The temple though does not stand alone, as it is flanked by the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erectheion.
After coming down from the Acropolis take a tour through a part of history that isn’t well known about Greece, and that is its Jewish history which spans 2300 years which is the classical period of Athens! At the Jewish Museum of Athens there are exhibits and material evidence of this rich history with subject areas such as the synagogues, Jewish holidays, traditional costumes, the Holocaust, the cycle of life and more.
The idea of building a Jewish Museum of Greece was first conceived in the 1970’s by members of the Jewish Community of Athens, who offered every kind of assistance towards the realization of this dream. As the Museum’s collection grew and its activities expanded, it soon outgrew its first premises. In the following years the Museum’s activities expanded; they involved both the research and study of the Greek Jews with substantial financial support from the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Associations of its Friends, information and influence exchange.
